DE GEA FACES ACID TEST
Petr Shilton is regarded to be one of the greatest ever goalkeepers. He has said that Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea will be having an acid test when his side faces Manchester City in the crucial Manchester derby. This match is being built up as the potential title decider. Both the clubs come into the match having been separated by just three points with only two matches remaining in the season after this game. Hence, if City win the match, then they could potentially be crowned the Champions. However, even if United managed a draw, then it could see United win their record 20th Premier league title.
Hence, there is a lot of stress and pressure upon the players ahead of this match. David de Gea has flattered to deceive in such a situation previously. Even though his form has seen a major improvement in recent months, Peter Shilton regards this to be the biggest test that he will face in his Manchester United career up until now. De Gea’s performances from Manchester United have been questioned by a lot of critics since it is £ 18 million move from Atletico Madrid in the summer. However, he has been performing at his best ever since the injury to Andreas Lindegaard made him the undisputed number one at United.
“It is possibly the biggest game of his career, and if he can come through it and have a good game, it could clinch the title for United and cement his progress. This derby is the acid test now. From a technique point of view, I wasn’t totally convinced when I saw him in the early part of the season. If he has a wobbly game and United get beaten, people will still be pointing fingers,” said Shilton ahead of the match.
